When you purchase music off somewhere like iTunes, all you are doing is purchasing a license to use the music. It is the same principle as if you buy some software. You can use it for your own private benefit, but copying it to distribute is against the rules. Whether it’s copying to sell, or just to lend to a friend. You can make copies for yourself, so that you can have the music on other machines/CDs you listen to, but you should not give away the music to people who have not bought it themselves.
